Lighting has evolved greatly over the years and we are now in an exciting era where high efficiency lighting is available at a very affordable price.
Changing your existing light fixtures to LED lights can create enormous savings in energy consumption and reduce your power bill considerably. The expected Return on investment for LED lighting is less than 3 years and with a lifespan of 10 plus years per LED bulb this is a very smart investment indeed.
When evaluating the benefits of LED lighting you should consider what types of fittings you have in your home to determine the best course of action, below is a list of the most common fixture types and what to consider when wanting to change to LED's
Types of lighting fixtures
Incandescent lamp holder
This type of fitting doesn't require any change to work and you can purchase LED globes that will fit directly into your existing incandescent fittings.
Fluorescent fittings can be upgraded to LED tubes however in doing so the existing fitting needs to be re-wired so as to bypass the ballast. The reason for this is that if you don't bypass the ballast then a large portion of the energy savings is lost as the ballast consumes power.
CFL globes (Compact fluorescent lights)
CFL fittings can be upgraded to LED globes without any change to existing fittings or wiring.
Halogen down lights
Halogen down lights consume a lot of energy and are regarded as an extremely inefficient form of lighting. They are also extremely common and found in most homes and businesses. LED downlights provide a significant improvement to power consumption and fit the existing space where original downlights were mounted
